What AI shopping shows

#

When a question has shopping intent, ChatGPT can answer with product cards: a title, an image, a price, a rating, a retailer link, and sometimes a label. AI shopping records those cards for each ChatGPT answer Searchly collects for your prompts.

Open AI shopping from the sidebar. Overview shows how often ChatGPT showed products, how often they were yours, the brands beside you, the retailers ChatGPT linked to, and what it searched for. Products lists each product with its answers, position, price, rating, and retailers. Prompts shows the result for each prompt; open a prompt to see the products ChatGPT showed and their positions, with an excerpt of the answer.

AI shopping measures ChatGPT answers. Answers from other models are not measured for products, which is different from showing none.

How products are attributed

#

Searchly decides whose product a card shows from its title, as ChatGPT wrote it. It looks for your brand name and the names of the competitors you track as whole words in the title, ignoring case and punctuation. When a title contains more than one of those names, the one that comes first decides. A name of three characters or fewer counts only when the title starts with it.

A product whose title contains none of those names counts as Untracked brand. Products sold under other names count as Untracked brand too, including yours. A title that starts with a brand ChatGPT listed in an answer and that you do not track also counts as Untracked brand, for example an accessory made for your product. The retailer link never decides the brand. Open a product to see the name it matched on.

Searchly attributes products each time you open the report, so adding or renaming a competitor also changes earlier results. Retailers are grouped by the website ChatGPT linked to. A link to your website counts as your store, and a link to a tracked competitor's website as theirs. A marketplace such as Amazon, eBay, Walmart, Target, or Etsy always counts as a retailer, even when the listing carries your brand name. For any other link, or no link, the retailer name ChatGPT showed decides: your brand name counts as your store and a competitor's name as theirs. The Retailers section shows how many of your products were shown with a link to your site.

Read the shopping metrics

MetricCalculationWhat to read
Answers with productsAnswers with products ÷ measured ChatGPT answers × 100Share of measured ChatGPT answers that showed products, sponsored ones included.
Shelf presenceAnswers showing at least one of your products ÷ answers with organic products × 100Share of answers with organic products that showed at least one of your products.
Share of shelfYour products shown ÷ all products shown × 100Your share of all products ChatGPT showed, including brands you don't track. Sponsored products are excluded.
Ranked firstAnswers whose first product was yours ÷ answers with organic products × 100Share of answers with organic products where the first product was yours.
Avg. shelf positionSum of your best position in each answer ÷ answers showing your productsYour best position, averaged over the answers that showed your products. Lower is better.

For example, if ChatGPT showed products in 12 of 40 measured answers, Answers with products is 30%. If 10 of those 12 answers showed organic products, meaning products that are not sponsored, and yours appeared in 3 of them, Shelf presence is 30%. Share of shelf counts every product card ChatGPT showed, so a product shown in four answers counts four times. Sponsored products count toward Answers with products and appear in the prompt details, marked Sponsored; they never enter the other four metrics. A prompt whose answers showed only sponsored products is marked Sponsored only.

A measured 0% is a result, not missing data: a Shelf presence of 0% means ChatGPT showed organic products and none of them were yours. A change from the previous period appears only when both periods have at least 10 answers behind the metric; otherwise the page says why the change is hidden. There is no comparison with a period that ended before product capture started.

Get useful shopping data

Products appear for questions a shopper asks before buying, such as "best waterproof trail shoes under $150". ChatGPT rarely shows products for software, services, or questions about a company. If it showed products in none of your answers, the page says so and links to Prompts.

  1. Check that ChatGPT is one of the project's models in Settings, under Models. Without it, AI shopping has no answers to read.
  2. Add prompts that name a product category and a need, and where useful a budget or a comparison. See Manage prompts.
  3. Add the competitors whose products you expect beside yours, using the names that appear in their product titles. See Compare competitors.
  4. Wait for ChatGPT answers to your prompts to be collected. Products appear once those answers are captured; answers collected before product capture started have no product data.

The Overview lists brands that appeared in answers with products and that you do not track. Use it to decide which competitors to add.

Know the limits

#

AI shopping measures ChatGPT only. An answer collected before product capture started, or collected in a way that does not include product cards, is not measured. When products were captured for fewer ChatGPT answers than Searchly collected, the page shows both numbers. Not measured is not zero.

The price is the one ChatGPT showed: the first retailer's price, which may not be the lowest. Ratings and labels are the ones ChatGPT displayed, and product titles appear as ChatGPT wrote them.

Dates follow the day each answer was scheduled, in UTC. Results describe your tracked prompts, not every shopping question people ask ChatGPT. A product card shows what ChatGPT displayed; it does not show whether anyone clicked it or bought the product.

Use the API

#

Your own tools can read the same data through the Searchly API or the MCP server, with an API key that has the read permission. getShoppingReport returns the counts behind each metric, so you calculate the rates above from them. getShoppingPromptEvidence returns the products ChatGPT showed for one prompt, and getShoppingProductEvidence returns every appearance of one product, using its key from the report.

Dates are UTC days, at most 366 per request. The report covers the last 30 days unless you choose dates. Before any products are captured, it returns zero counts, not an error.
